The National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) has successfully expanded the dispatch and receiving bay at its Luchenza Depot in Thyolo, marking a significant milestone in enhancing operational efficiency and resilience.
Previously, the limited size of the bay made it challenging to load and offload maize, especially during the rainy season, as it exposed maize to moisture. The newly extended bay now accommodates 30-tonne trucks, enabling smooth operations regardless of weather conditions and ensuring that grain handling and dispatch activities continue without disruption.

The construction was executed internally by NFRA’s own technical team. This in-house approach not only reduced project costs but also enhanced staff capacity by providing hands-on experience in facility improvement projects.

The successful completion of this upgrade reflects NFRA’s continued commitment to operational excellence, innovation, and the sustainable use of resources. With this improvement, the Agency is now better positioned to ensure the efficient handling and timely movement of grain within Malawi’s national reserve system.
