The National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) held a Board Orientation Meeting on Monday, 19 January 2026, at its Headquarters in Kanengo, Lilongwe, marking an important milestone following the appointment of new Members to the Agency’s Governing Board.
The meeting commenced with the formal swearing-in of the newly appointed Board Members, officially ushering them into office in line with statutory requirements. The ceremony underscored NFRA’s continued commitment to strong corporate governance, accountability, and effective oversight in the management of Malawi’s strategic food reserves.
Speaking during the meeting, Board Chairperson Dr Bruce Munthali welcomed all participants and congratulated the newly appointed Board Members on their selection. He emphasised that serving on the Board is both a responsibility and a national calling to advance food security in Malawi. Dr Munthali highlighted the importance of collaboration, openness, and mutual trust among Board Members, while acknowledging the support of NFRA Management and government representatives, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Finance, and the Department of Statutory Corporations. He encouraged the Board to approach their roles with commitment, dedication, and a shared focus on achieving NFRA’s strategic objectives.
As part of the orientation programme, Board Members were briefed on NFRA’s legal mandate, governance framework, operational setup, and strategic priorities. The sessions also highlighted NFRA’s critical role in stabilising grain markets, supporting smallholder farmers, and safeguarding the country’s strategic food reserves.
The programme further included a familiarisation tour of the Kanengo NFRA Silos, where Board Members gained first-hand appreciation of maize procurement processes, quality assurance measures, storage systems, and controls put in place to preserve grain quality. The tour provided valuable practical insight into how NFRA’s core operations contribute to national food security.
The orientation meeting has positioned the newly appointed Board to effectively discharge its oversight and policy guidance role as NFRA continues to strengthen its operations and resilience in support of Malawi’s food security agenda.
